Gender Wayang secara khusus adalah barungan alit yang merupakan gamelan Pewayangan (Wayang Kulit dan Wayang Wong) dengan instrumen pokoknya yang terdiri dari 4 tungguh gender berlaras slendro (lima nada). Keempat gender ini terdiri dari sepasang gender pemade (nada agak besar) dan sepasang kantilan (nada agak kecil). Keempat gender, masing-masing berbilah sepuluh (dua oktaf) yang dimainkan dengan mempergunakan 2 panggul.
Gender wayang secara umum merupakan sebuah tungguhan berbilah dengan terampa yang terbuat dari kayu, sebagai alas dari resonator berbentuk silinder dari bahan bambu atau yang lebih dikenal dengan sebutan bumbung sebagai tempat menggantung bilah. Bentuk tungguhan dari segi bilah gamelan Gender Wayang dalam buku “Ensiklopedi Karawitan Bali” karya Pande Made Sukerta disebutkan berbentuk bulig yaitu bilah yang terbuat dari perunggu atau bilah kalor adalah bilah yang permukaannya menggunakan garis linggir (kalor) dan dalam buku ini juga disebutkan bilah ini biasa digunakan pada jenis-jenis tungguhan gangsa seperti halnya gamelan Gender Wayang. Bilah bulig adalah bentuk bilah yang digunakan di gamelan Gender Wayang secara umum di Bali.
Kemudian terampa ataupun pelawah dari gamelan Gender Wayang di Bali memiliki model dan bentuk yang sama, yaitu 2 (dua) buah adeg-adeg yang terbuat dari kayu berfungsi sebagai penyangga gantungan bilah dan tempat resonator atau bumbung. Meskipun secara umum model dan bentuknya sama, faktanya dari setiap daerah memiliki ciri khas dan keunikannya masing-masing sesuai dengan budaya seni dan kreativitas seniman di daerah setempat. Hal ini terletak pada ornamentasi yang berarti hiasan atau pepayasan. Di sini sesuai dengan pendapat dari Mantle Hood yang menyebutkan bahwa dalam kontes etnomusikologi musik itu dipelajari melalui peraturan-peraturan tertentu yang dihubungkan dengan bentuk kesenian lainnya; seperti tari, drama, arsitektur, dan ungkapan kebudayaan lain termasuk bahasa, agama, dan filsafat. Unsur arsitektur yang merupakan induk dari ornamentasi dan pepayasan juga hadir sebagai bagian dari alat musik, yang berkaitan dengan bidang tertentu. Khususnya dalam gamelan Gender Wayang terlatak pada bidang terampa atau tungguhan. Setiap daerah di Bali memiliki sebuah persepsi yang tidak sama, walaupun berakar dari satu konsep style atau gaya di Bali, hal ini juga berkaitan dengan kearifan lokal atau disebut local genius dari masyarakat Bali yang majemuk.
Daerah Bali Utara yaitu Buleleng dan sekitarnya Gender Wayang memiliki ciri khas terampa dengan penuh kesederhanaannya yaitu adeg-adeg di buat hanya sesuai bentuk wadag (kasar) saja dan dengan bambu resonator yang dibiarkan alami yang difinishing (diselesaikan) dengan sentuhan perpaduan warna merah dan biru dari cat. Perpaduan warna merah dan biru inilah yang menjadikan sebuah ciri khas tersendiri dari daerah Buleleng dengan julukannya Bumi Panji Sakti dengan warna merah sebagai warna kebesaran. Dari warna inilah orang langsung mengetahui bahwa Gender Wayang itu milik dan ciri khas daerah Buleleng.
Di daerah Badung dan Denpasar, dari segi bentuk dan model hampir persis dengan yang ada di daerah Bali Utara khususnya Buleleng, pelawah di daerah Badung dan Denpasar memiliki sebuah keunikan tersendiri yaitu tungguhan pelawahnya bisa dilipat apabila sudah selesai dimainkan, hal ini menurut seniman gender dari Banjar Kayu Mas, I Wayan Suweca, Sskar. pada kelas Filsafat Seni Karawitan dikatakan hal ini berkaitan dengan mitologi Ciwa Tattwa dan mengandung konsep Purusa dan Predana. Purusa dan Predana yaitu sebuah filsafat yang menguraikan dua hal yang berbeda apabila bersatu akan menghasilkan sebuah energi yang besar yang biasa disebut dengan lanang wadon atau laki perempuan (Wawancara dengan I Wayan Suweca, SS.Kar, di kampus ISI Denpasar, tanggal 9 Desember 2009). Walaupun bentuk dan model sama persis, pelawahnya di kedua daerah ini sudah dibubuhi dengan sedikti ornamentasi atau pepayasan pada adeg-adeg berupa beberapa jenis motif ukiran sebagai pemanis dan diberi aksen warna emas dari warna prada.
Tabuh dalam pertunjukan Wayang :
Pertunjukan wayang kulit yang lengkap biasanya memakai sejumlah tabuh yang berdasarkan fungsinya. Tabuh-tabuh yang dimaksud antara lain:

| Tabuh panyudamalan | gending khusus untuk mengiringi upacara pangruwatan (dalam Wayang Sapuh Leger) |
Gamelan Gender Wayang mempunyai 2 fungsi , yaitu :
- Fungsi Gamelan Gender Wayang sebagai karawitan berdiri sendiri
- Fungsi Gamelan Gender Wayang dalam mengiringi pertunjukkan wayang
Fungsi Gamelan Gender Wayang sebagai karawitan berdiri sendiri
Sebagai karawitan berdiri sendiri Gender Wayang lebih banyak berfungsi sebagai penunjang pelaksanaan upacara. Dalam fungsinya sebagai penunjang upacara , Gender Wayang dipergunakan untuk upacara Pitra Yadnya dan Manusa Yadnya. Pada saat pelaksanaan upacara Pitra Yadnya Gender Wayang itu biasanya berfungsi untuk mengiringi mayat ke tempat pembakaran/kuburan . Hal ini terjadi apabila upacara itu dilakukan secara besar-besaran dan mempergunakan “Bade” sebagai tempat mayat , sementara dibawahnya diapit oleh dua orang bermain gender yang duduk di atas sandangan bambu (penyangga dari bade tersebut) ,maka Gender Wayang dapat disimpulkan sebagai gamelan sakral bagi umat Hindu. Selain itu Gender wayang ini juga berfungsi untuk mengiringi upacara Manusa Yadnya (potong gigi)
Fungsi Gamelan Gender Wayang dalam mengiringi pertunjukkan wayang
Seperti yang dijelaskan tadi bahwa gender dan pertunjukan wayang yang diiringi mempunyai hubungan erat satu sama lainnya . Dalam pertunjukkan keduannya merupakan satu kesatuan yang tidak dipisahkan . Suatu pementasan wayang dapat berfungsi sebagai Wali (sacral) sebagai bebali (ritual) dan sebagai Balih-balihan (skuler) , menurut jenis dari upacara yang dilakukan .
Laras
Secara umum gamelan Gender Wayang adalah instrument yang berlaras slendro, namun secara spesifik di Bali laras slendro dalam gamelan Gender Wayang di bagi atas 3 bagian berdasarkan atas tuning atau di Bali disebut dengan saih. Adapun ketiga saih tersebut adalah saih Pudak Setegal (saih gede) , Asep menyan (saih menengah) , Sekar Kemoning (saih kecil) . Diantara ketiga saih tersebut tentu memiliki daerah populasi masing-masing , hal ini disebabkan
oleh faktor rasa dan kegemaran masyarakat pendukungnya sendiri.
Bentuk Tungguhan
Tungguhan merupakan istilah untuk menunjukkan satuan dari alat gamelan yang terdiri dari pelawah dan bagian-bagiannya berikut bilah atau pencon . Gender Wayang merupakan sebuah tungguhan berbilah dengan terampa yang terbuat dari kayu sebagai alasnya dari resonator
berbentuk silinder dari bahan bamboo atau yang lebih dikenal dengan sebutan Bumbung dan sebagai tempat menggantung bilah. Bentuk tungguhan dari segi bilah gamelan gender wayang dalam buku “Ensiklopedia Karawitan Bali “ karya Pande Made Sukerta disebutkan berbentuk bulig yaitu bilah yang terbuat dari perunggu atau bilah kalor adala bilah yang permukaannya menggunakan garis linggir (kalor) dan dalam buku ini juga disebutkan bilah ini biasa digunakan pada jenis-jenis tungguhan gangsa seperi halnya gamelan gender wayang . Bilah Bulig adalah bentuk bilah yang digunakan di gamelan gender wayang secara umum.
Bentuk Lagu
Banjar Kayumas di daerah kodya Denpasar dan Badung merupakan barometer dari keberadaan gamelan gender wayang yang memiliki cirri khas khusus dari bentuk lagu yang dimiliki dengan tokohnya I Wayan Suweca SSkar. Beberapa jenis lagu yang popular beredar di masyarakat lebih dominan menggunakan stle dari Kayumas Kaja seperti gending Candi rebah , Sekar Taman Burisrawa Katak Ngongkek .Gendin-gending style Kayumas memiliki kesan gending yang pelan , lembut dan halus tidak banyak dijumpai adanya kotekan , kalaupun ada biasanya menggunakan kotekan tiga atau telu.
