Seperti halnya dengan Gebyog, genre tarian ini juga berasal dari bunyi-bunyian khas iringan musiknya, yaitu suara vokal ritmis yang mirib dengan suara-suara yang dilantunkan secara koor dalam cak. Sebanyak dua lusin vokalis menyanyikan suara’Pung-Cake-Pung-Cake-Pung’ dalam keeragaman untuk mengiringi tarian. Cakepung merupakan tari pergaulan,dilakukan untuk rekreasian dan hiburan. Genre ini sekarang hanya bisa ditemukan di kabupaten Karangasem dan di pulau Lombok yang dulu pernah menjadi daerah bawahan Karangasem. Sebuah pertunjukan Cakepung bia dilakukan pada malam hari,selama masa luang. Para penari berkumpul di bale banjar atau halaman sekuler atau aula publik, ekitar pukul 19.00. Para lelaki berpakaian gaya pakaian sehari-hari,dengan baju putih dan udeng (hiasan kepala sederhana). Sebagaian dari mereka berpartisipasi membawa botol berisi tuak (anggur tradisional Bali), brem(anggur beras) atau arak(brendi beras), sedangkan pria lainnya membawa ayam aduan dalam keranjang bambu. Para pria duduk dalam lingkaran, tidak formal, di lantai bale banjar, dengan botol dan perlengkapan lain didepannya. Salah satu peserta akan mengambil naskah lontar yang berissi tembang-tembang macapat. Ini merupakan lagu-lagu cinta klasik, ditulis dengan bahasa Bali yang merupakan bahan opera Bali. Sang pembaca menyanyikan kalimat-kalimat dari naskah itu dengan iringan suling dan rebab. Setelah setiap baris lagu, anggota lain dari grup itu berbicara sebentar menguraikan kalimat-kalimat dalam lagu untuk menjelaskan kepada penonton yang mungkin sulit memahaminya. Ketika malam beranjak, anggota-anggota lain dari grup itu mengambil alih tugas membaca dan menjelaskan naskah. Setiap orang bebas minum, sementara nyanyian terus berlangsung. Sebagaian merawat dan mengelus-ngelus ayam aduan, sedangkan yang lainnya sibuk mengunyah sirih. Begitu para lelaki merasakan efek tuak, arak, dan brem, suasana lebih menjadi riuh dan semarak, dan berbagai argumen tentang makna lagu itu aling diperdebatkan. Akhirnya, seseorang dengan cepat berdiri.”pung!” teriak sang pemimpin, “chakepung-chakepung-chakepung!”pria lain bergabung dalam nyanyian itu dan beberapa yang lain berdiri dan menari, sedangkan beberapa yang lain masih sedang memegang ayam aduannya. Satu atau lebih pria boleh membawa Genggong dan memainkannya sambil menari pada saat yang sama. Gerakannya sepontan dan dalam gaya kocak, serta menyerupai ngibing tanpa elemen-elemen yang menggoda. Beberapa dari pria itu merupakan penari yang pernah memplajari bentuk-bentuk tarian klasik. Elemen-elemen tari baris, topeng dan gambuh bisa dilihat dalam peristiwa ini. Kemudian suka cita, teriakan dan pujian membahana. Begitu seorang penari kelelahan, ia boleh duduk dan diganti dengan yang lainnya. Kegembiraan ini berlangsung terus sampai menjelang fajar.
