Kadek Budi Setiawan lives in Sukawati village, the centre of puppet theatre in Bali, and belongs to one of the most renowned families of Balinese puppeteers. He is the son of the famous I Ketut Madra, and his mother, Ni Wayan Nondri, was the first female puppeteer in Bali. His brother is the master puppeteer Wayan Mardika Buana, and his uncle, Wayan Wija, the most innovative and internationally well-known Balinese puppeteer.
Kadek has trained since childhood in all aspects of puppetry, dance and music for Balinese theatre.
He performs in both Balinese and English, and is completing a degree in English at Udayana University, Bali.
Experience:
1993- 2000: dancer, musician and singer in performances for the Bali Arts Festival.
1993 – 2006: puppeteer for shadow puppet performances with Wayan Wija, Ni Wayan Nondri (mother), Wayan Mardika Buana (brother), in Indonesia, Japan, Italy and Germany.
2000: musician for Australian based performance, Theft of Sita, Hannover, Germany.
2001 – 2006: puppeteer for Shadow Light performances. Bali Arts Festival.
2006: puppeteer and dancer for US based performance, Shadow Bang, led by Evan Ziporyn and Wija. Amsterdam Grachten Festival, August.
