Gong Gede juga termasuk barungan ageng namun langka, karena hanya ada di beberapa daerah saja. Gamelan Gong Gede yang terlihat memakai sedikitnya 30 (tigapuluh) macam instrumen berukuran relatif besar (ukuran bilah, kendang, gong dan cengceng kopyak adalah barung gamelan yang terbesar yang melibatkan antara 40 (empatpuluh) – 50 (limapuluh) orang pemain. Gamelan yang bersuara agung ini dipakai untuk memainkan tabuh-tabuh lelambatan klasik yang cenderung formal namun tetap dinamis, dimainkan untuk mengiringi upacara-upacara besar di Pura-pura (Dewa Yadnya), termasuk mengiringi tari upacara seperti Baris, Topeng, Rejang, Pendet dan lain-lain.
Beberapa upacara besar yang dilaksanakan oleh kalangan warga puri keturunan raja-raja zaman dahulu juga diiringi dengan gamelan Gong Gede. Akhir-akhir ini Gamelan Gong Gede juga ditampilkan sebagai pengiring upacara formal tertentu yang diselenggarakan oleh pemerintah daerah dan untuk mengiringi Sendratari.
Gong Gede berlaras Pelog lima nada, dengan patutan atau patet tembang, dengan instrumentasi yang meliputi (sesuai yang ada di Kintamani dan STSI Denpasar):
